Anita Ruth Gillett was born October 6, 1945, in Kansas City,
Kansas, the fourth child and second daughter of Ira and Atha (Morlan) Gillett.
She was educated in the Kansas City, Kansas School system --
going to:
- Mark Twain, Hawthorne, and Fairfax Grade Schools
- Northwest Junior High School
- Wyandotte High School.
In her senior year at Wyandotte she was in the National Honor Society and graduated in May, 1963.
Anita continued her education at:
- Kansas City, Kansas Community Junior College -- graduated Cum Laude in 1965
- Kansas State Teachers College in Pittsburg, Kansas -- one semester
- University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas --
graduated in 1967 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration
Anita married James Martin Tindall, son of Theodore William and Ruth (Martin) Tindall, on April 2, 1967.
Following graduation from K.U., Anita and Jim moved to Lafayette, California, where Jim began
employment with California Packing Company (name later changed to Del Monte Corporation) in
San Francisco. He was in a management training program.
Anita went to work for Sperry and Hutchinson
Company (S&H Green Stamps) in San Francisco, working for the Marketing Planning Manager.
They only lived in Lafayette a couple of months before moving to nearby Walnut Creek. However, Jim was
due to be drafted into the Army. Since he was sure he would be sent to Vietnam (as his brother before him
had been), he joined the Navy instead. After training in San Diego, he was assigned a position as a
computer programmer and spent his four years in the Navy working in the Point Loma area of San Diego.
He never went to sea.
After Jim was discharged from the Navy, he and Anita decided to remain in San Diego rather than move back to
the San Francisco area. When they moved to San Diego, Anita went to work for the San Diego County Medical
Society working with the Smoking Research/San Diego project, which was funded by the Dept. of Health,
Education and Welfare and administered by the Medical Society.
Smoking Research was one of two smoking
education projects in the country. The other was in Syracuse, New York. When the funding for that
project ended in early 1974, a new one was established called Health Education Project. That project only
lasted until early 1975.
Anita was Office Manager and Secretary to the Project Coordinator for both projects.
In 1974 Anita and Jim separated and were officially divorced in March 1979.
In 1975, Anita went to work for Gillies International, distributors of fine chemicals to the food,
feed and pharmaceutical industries, as an Administrative Assistant. She left Gillies in January 1981
when her boss, Wayne T. Seltzer, started his own company, Seltzer Chemicals, Inc., where she was
Secretary/Treasurer and Controller. She remained with Seltzer Chemicals until May 2000.
Anita spent the next 3 years traveling and enjoying life! However, in May 2003, she went back to work
in a ‘retirement job’ working as Administrative Assistant with Prothos Corporation d/b/a AAA Mortgage Market.
When the mortgage industry ‘tanked’ in September 2007, the remaining 5 employees (including Anita) were
laid off. At this writing, she is blissfully unemployed.
Anita has been active in a number of professional organizations, including:
International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP) (formerly National
Secretaries Association, then Professional Secretaries International) since December 1976.
She earned her Certified Professional Secretary designation in 1978.
She became a member of Executive Women International (EWI), San Diego Chapter, in 1986 and served as President
in 1997. In 2003 she was made a Life Member of the Chapter.
During the late 80’s and early 90’s, she was a member of the Credit and Financial Development Division
of the National Association of Credit Management.
Anita had two precious black kitties who were true blessings from God:
Dolly Sue (April 9, 1973 – July 12, 1994)
and
Jennifer Lynn
(October 6, 1973 – September 28, 1995).
Raised in the Presbyterian church, Anita became a member of The Unity Center, formerly Church of Today, affiliated with Unity School of
Christianity in Lee’s Summit, MO, in 2001. She was active with the Women’s Group for the 3 years that
it existed. She was introduced to Unity in the 1970’s by her in-laws, Ruth and Ted Tindall.
Since November 2001, Anita has been part of a social group -- they call themselves "Spanish Class."
It is comprised of friends from both IAAP and EWI. They meet monthly (for "Happy Hour"!).
Anita enjoys reading, watching movies and Tai Chi.
