BASICS for EVERYONE

• Get in the habit of labeling new pictures you take or receive.
• For pictures you already have, sort and label as many as possible.
• If your label is written on the back of a printed picture, use a felt-tip pen that will not damage the picture.
• Your label should include:
  • Name of any person(s) in picture.
  • Date (or at least, year) picture was taken -- or age of person(s) at time picture taken.
  • Location, when relevant.
• Prepare a written or audio story of your life that includes:
  • When and where born -- including any special information such as "born at home" or "3rd generation born at specified hospital".
  • Brothers' and sisters' names and dates of birth.
  • First memories
  • Favoriate games or toys
  • Addresses where you lived, with dates (include REASON moved to address)
  • Education
    • Schools attended
    • Subjects you liked (or disliked) most
    • Activities -- sports, clubs, etc
    • Special friends and/or memories
  • Summer activities while in school -- work, sports, special vacations, etc.
  • Church or religious training and/or activities
  • Pets
  • Style of upbringing you received -- strict, free, loving, fearful, etc and your feelings about that upbringing
  • When and where you met your spouse
    • Spouse's name and date of birth
    • When and where you were married
    • Where you honeymooned
  • Children
    • Names and dates of birth / adoption
    • Early life, including schools, illnesses, joys and problems.
  • Employment - when and where (include positions held and your likes or dislikes of the work you did.)
  • Military service - when and where (include your ranks, special experiences and your feelings )
  • Special vacations, trips, reunions, etc
  • Hobbies, clubs, organizations, etc
  • Health and illnesses (consider a separate health genealogy chart)
  • Likes and dislikes -- foods, books, movies, etc
  • Friends
  • Retirement date and activies / lifestyle after that date
  • Deaths that impacted your life
