SUMMARY of the HISTORY
of the HAYNES FAMILY
The BeginningThe Haynes name has also been spelled in the records as "Hanes" and "Haines". It is an English place name for the man from any of the various places named for the Old English word "heghen", meaning enclosure. Haynes is a common place name in Devon, England. The first Haynes on the Gillett family tree comes from Virginia. The FIFTH Generation - The Eli Haynes Family BACK to the GILLETT FAMILYEli Haynes, the first Haynes on the Gillett family tree, was born in 1804 in Patrick County, Virginia. Patrick County is located in the southwest section of Virginia in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Eli married twice. His first wife, Mary Branson, was born about 1807 (probably in Tennessee but it may have been Virginia). It is not certain, but Eli and Mary were probably married about 1826 or 1827 in Marion County, Tennessee. Marion County is located over the Appalachian Mountains in southeast Tennessee, just west of Chattanooga, Tennessee. Their first son was born in Tennessee. About 1830 the Eli Haynes family moved to Gasconade County, Missouri, where their remaining six children were born. Gasconade County is located in central Missouri on the Missouri River, about half way between St. Louis and Jefferson City. About 1847 they moved again. This time to Barry County, Missouri, where Eli had a farm in the Capps Creek Township. Barry County is located in the southwest part of Missouri. Capps Creek Township is located in the extreme northwest corner of Barry County near the Lawrence / Newton county lines. At the time Eli was about 43 years old and Mary was about 40 years old. Their oldest daughter, Delilah, was about 12 years old.
