SUMMARY of the HISTORY
of the HUBBARD FAMILY
The BeginningHubbard is an Anglo-Saxon name. It is a corruption of Hubert, meaning bright form or fair hope. The original Hubbards were people who were in a specific religious sect. They worshiped the Norse Sea God "Hubba". The name first came to be around 1100 AD on the northeast coast of England. Our Hubbards can be traced back to the 20th generation or about 1349 in England. The Twentieth Generation - The John Hubbard FamilyJohn Hubbard was the first Hubbard of record, being born in 1349 in La Tye, Suffolk, England. He was the father of one known son.The Nineteenth Generation - The Thomas Hubbard FamilyThomas Hubbard was born in 1369 in La Tye, Suffolk, England, the son of John Hubbard. He was the father of one known son.The Eighteenth Generation - The William Hubbard FamilyWilliam Hubbard was born in 1389 in England, the son of Thomas Hubbard. He was the father of one known son.The Seventeenth Generation - The Thomas Hubbard FamilyThomas Hubbard was born in 1409 in Leyham, Suffolk, England, the son of William Hubbard. He was the father of one known son. Thomas died after 1494 over 85 years old.The Sixteenth Generation - The James Hubbard FamilyJames Hubbard was born in 1436 in Monks Eleigh, Suffolk, England, the son of Thomas Hubbard. He married Margery Lyhart. Margery was born in 1440 in Lodden, Norfolk, England.James also had married Dorthea Glemham and Margery Nauton. James and Margery (Lyhart) Hubbard were the parents of four children (notice the name/spelling change which was common during this period):
Margery (Lyhart) Hubbard died in 1494 about 54 years old. James Hubbard died in Suffolk, England, February 23, 1516/17, about 81 years old. The Fifteenth Generation - The Miles Hobart FamilyMiles Hobart was born in 1479 in Norwich, Norfolk, England, the son of James and Margery (Lyhart) Hubbard. The County of Norfolk is located on the east coast of England, just north of the county of Suffolk. Miles married Ellinor Blaverhasset. She was born in 1507 in the County of Norfolk, England. They were the parents of two sons:
The Fourteenth Generation - The Thomas Hobart FamilyThomas Hobart was born in 1537 in Plumsread, Norfolk, England, the son of Miles and Ellinor (Blaverhasset) Hobbart. He married Audrey Hare. Audrey was born in 1541 in Norfolk, Norfolk, England, the daughter of William and Alice (Rugge) Hare. They were the parents of four children:
The Thirteenth Generation - The Henry Hobart FamilyHenry Hobart was born in 1553 in Plumstead, Norfolk, England, the son of Thomas and Audrey (Hare) Hobart. He married Dorothy Bell April 22, 1570, in Blickling, Norfolk, England. Dorothy was born October 19, 1552, in Beaupre, Norfolk, England, the daughter of Robert and Dorothy (Beaupre) Bell.Henry was a Knight and Baron. He and Dorothy were the parents of fourteen children:
Henry Hobart died December 29, 1625, in Blickling, Norfolk, England, about 72 years old. His wife, Dorothy (Bell) Hobart died April 30, 1641, in Convent Garden, Middlesex, England, at the age of 89. The Twelfth Generation - The Edmund Hobart FamilyEdmund Hobart was born January 1, 1572/73, in Hingham, Norfolk, England, the son of Henry and Dorothy (Bell) Hobart. He married Margaret Dewey there September 7, 1600. Margaret was born in 1574 in Wymondham, Norfolk, England, the daughter of Robert and Margaret (Stasye) Dewey.This family is a direct ancestor of President George W. Bush (see Special Kelly Stories) thru their daughter, Rebecca (Hubbard) Bangs. Edmund and Margaret were parents of sixteen children (again notice the name change):
Edmund Hobart died March 8, 1645/46, at Hingham, Norfolk, England, at the age of 73 while his wife, Margaret (Dewey) Hobart, died June 23, 1649, in Charlestown, Suffolk, England, about 75 years old. The Eleventh Generation - The George Hubbard FamilyGeorge Hubbard was born in 1600 in Glastonbury, Somerset, England, the son of Edmund and Margaret (Dewey) Hobart. He married Mary Bishop about 1620 in England. Mary was born in England about 1600, the daughter of John and Ann (Stevens) Bishop.It appears that the George Hubbards and the John Bishops (Mary's parents) came to America about the same time, if not in the same boat. They came about 1628 to 1632, first going to Watertown, Massachusetts. They were in a group of 60 people that moved to Wethersfield, Connecticut, on October 15, 1635. George was chosen in 1636 by the Connecticut General Court to consider the bounds and survey the towns of Windsor and Wethersfield. He was made a freeman prior to 1639 when he was chosen to represent Wethersfield at the first colonial General Court. He was fined one shilling for being late to a 7am session of the General Court on April 5, 1639. The George Hubbards also lived in or had property in North Glastonbury, Milford, and Guilford where the Bishops had settled. George and Mary (Bishop) Hubbard were the parents of eleven children:
Mary (Bishop) Hubbard died September 14, 1675, in Guilford, Connecticut, about 75 years old. George Hubbard died May 23, 1683, in Guilford, Connecticut, about 83 years old. The Tenth Generation - The George Hubbard FamilyGeorge Hubbard was born in 1620 in England, the son of George and Mary (Bishop) Hubbard. He married Elizabeth Watts in 1639 in Hartford, Connecticut. Elizabeth was born in 1622 in Dorset, England, the daughter of Richard and Elizabeth (Duck) Watts.George was baptized December 15, 1650, when he was about 30 years old. In 1654 he was given freeman status. George and Elizabeth (Watts) Hubbard were the parents of eight children:
George Hubbard died March 16, 1684/85, in Middletown, Connecticut, about 65 years old. Elizabeth (Watts) Hubbard died December 6, 1702, in Middletown, Connecticut, about 80 years old. George's will was dated May 2, 1861. The Ninth Generation - The Daniel Hubbard FamilyDaniel Hubbard was born December 7, 1645, in Hartford, Connecticut, the son of George and Elizabeth (Watts) Hubbard. He married Mary Clark February 24, 1669/70, in Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut. Mary was born in 1647, the daughter of William and Elizabeth Clark.Daniel and Mary (Clark) Hubbard were the parents of one son:
Mary (Clark) Hubbard died December 24, 1673, in Middletown, Connecticut, about 26 years old. She died as a result of complications of child birth, just eight days after the birth of their son, Daniel. After the death of his wife, Daniel married as his second wife, Sarah Cornwall, on October 16, 1675. They had four daughters:
Daniel Hubbard died November 9, 1704, in Haddom, Connecticut, at the age of 59. His will was dated November 8, 1704. In it he named his second wife, Sarah, and all five of his children. The Eighth Generation - The Daniel Hubbard FamilyDaniel Hubbard was born December 16, 1673, in Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut, the son of Daniel and Mary (Clark) Hubbard. He married Susannah Bailey December 8, 1697. She was born in 1677 in Haddam, Middlesex County, Connecticut, the daughter of John and Lydia (Backus) Bailey.Daniel had first married Bathsheba Howe. Daniel and Susannah (Bailey) Hubbard were the parents of eight children:
Daniel Hubbard died January 14, 1756, about 82 years old. Susannah (Bailey) Hubbard died in 1722 about 47 years old. She is buried in the Ponsett Cemetery in Haddam, Connecticut. The Seventh Generation - The Daniel Hubbard FamilyDaniel Hubbard was born September 1, 1701, in Haddam, Middlesex County, Connecticut, the son of Daniel and Susannah (Bailey) Hubbard. He married Temperance Shaler April 15, 1727, in Haddam, Middlesex County, Connecticut. Temperance was born July 25, 1704, in Haddam, Middlesex County, Connecticut, the daughter of Thomas Shaler and Katherine Clark.Daniel and Temperance were the parents of seven children:
Daniel Hubbard died March 11, 1755, in Haddam, Middlesex County, Connecticut, at the age of 53. Temperance (Shaler) Hubbard had died there before 1746, less than 42 years old. The Sixth Generation - The Daniel Hubbard FamilyDaniel Hubbard was born March 1, 1729/30, in Haddam, Middlesex County, Connecticut, the son of Daniel and Temperance (Shaler) Hubbard. He married Eunice Clark on April 2, 1761, in Haddam, Middlesex County, Connecticut. Eunice was born May 17, 1736, in Haddam, Middlesex County, Connecticut, the daughter of William Clark and Judith Sutliff.Daniel served in the Revolutionary War as a private in Captain Kirtland's company. Daniel and Eunice were the parents of twelve children:
Daniel died in 1825 in Broom Hills, Greene County, New York about 95 years old. His wife, Eunice (Clark) Hubbard, died about 1810 in Broom Hills, Greene County, New York, about 74 years old. The Fifth Generation - The Matthew Green Hubbard FamilyMatthew Green Hubbard was born in East Haddam, Middlesex County, Connecticut, on November 11, 1763, the son of Daniel Hubbard and Eunice Clark. He married Wealthy Smith (some sources spelled her given name as "Wentley"). She was born about 1767 in Haddam, Middlesex County, Connecticut, the daughter of Jonathan Smith and Rebecca Brainerd.Matthew was a soldier in the War of 1812. He was baptized as an adult on July 21, 1822. Matthew and Wealthy were the parents of ten children:
Wealthy or Wentley (Smith) Hubbard died December 8, 1830, at East Haddam, Middlesex County, Connecticut, at the age of 63. Mathew then married as his second wife Maria Brainerd on April 30, 1831, in New York City, New York. Maria was born September 15, 1793, in East Haddam, Connecticut. The Fourth Generation - The William and Sarah (Hubbard) McClane FamilySarah Pratt Hubbard was born November 1, 1829, in East Hadden, Connecticut, the daughter of Matthew and Wentley (Smith) Hubbard. The 1850 census for Gallatin, Tennessee, listed Sarah as single and living with the Ezra Clark family.
I could not trace down the reason why Sarah was in Tennessee at the time. It was known that her father was still living in East Haddam, Connecticut, in 1870. He was living with his second wife, Maria; although, they may have been living in New York when Sarah left for Tennessee.
