The Beginning

Hubbard is an Anglo-Saxon name. It is a corruption of Hubert, meaning bright form or fair hope. The original Hubbards were people who were in a specific religious sect. They worshiped the Norse Sea God "Hubba".

The name first came to be around 1100 AD on the northeast coast of England. Our Hubbards can be traced back to the 20th generation or about 1349 in England.

Margery (Lyhart) Hubbard died in 1494 about 54 years old. James Hubbard died in Suffolk, England, February 23, 1516/17, about 81 years old.

The Thirteenth Generation   -   The Henry Hobart Family

Henry was a Knight and Baron. He and Dorothy were the parents of fourteen children:

• Edmund Hobart - born January 1, 1572/73 - married Margaret Dewey, the daughter of Robert and Margaret (Stasye) Dewey - Edmund died March 8, 1645/46, at the age of 73 - direct ancestor

Henry Hobart died December 29, 1625, in Blickling, Norfolk, England, about 72 years old. His wife, Dorothy (Bell) Hobart died April 30, 1641, in Convent Garden, Middlesex, England, at the age of 89.

The Twelfth Generation   -   The Edmund Hobart Family

This family is a direct ancestor of President George W. Bush (see Special Kelly Stories) thru their daughter, Rebecca (Hubbard) Bangs. Edmund and Margaret were parents of sixteen children (again notice the name change):

• George Hubbard - born 1600 - married Mary Bishop, the daughter of John and Ann (Stevens) Bishop - George died May 23, 1683, about 83 years old - direct ancestor

Edmund Hobart died March 8, 1645/46, at Hingham, Norfolk, England, at the age of 73 while his wife, Margaret (Dewey) Hobart, died June 23, 1649, in Charlestown, Suffolk, England, about 75 years old.

The Eleventh Generation   -   The George Hubbard Family

It appears that the George Hubbards and the John Bishops (Mary's parents) came to America about the same time, if not in the same boat. They came about 1628 to 1632, first going to Watertown, Massachusetts. They were in a group of 60 people that moved to Wethersfield, Connecticut, on October 15, 1635. George was chosen in 1636 by the Connecticut General Court to consider the bounds and survey the towns of Windsor and Wethersfield.

He was made a freeman prior to 1639 when he was chosen to represent Wethersfield at the first colonial General Court. He was fined one shilling for being late to a 7am session of the General Court on April 5, 1639. The George Hubbards also lived in or had property in North Glastonbury, Milford, and Guilford where the Bishops had settled.

George and Mary (Bishop) Hubbard were the parents of eleven children:

• George Hubbard - born 1620 - married Elizabeth Watts, the daughter of Richard and Elizabeth (Duck) Watts - died March 16, 1684/85, about 65 years old - direct ancestor

Mary (Bishop) Hubbard died September 14, 1675, in Guilford, Connecticut, about 75 years old. George Hubbard died May 23, 1683, in Guilford, Connecticut, about 83 years old.

The Tenth Generation   -   The George Hubbard Family

George was baptized December 15, 1650, when he was about 30 years old. In 1654 he was given freeman status.

George and Elizabeth (Watts) Hubbard were the parents of eight children:

• Mary Hubbard - born January 16, 1641/42 - died December 18, 1721, at age 78
• Joseph Hubbard - born December 10, 1643 - died December 26, 1686, at the age of 43
• Daniel Hubbard - born December 7, 1645 - married Mary Clark, the daughter of William and Elizabeth Clark - Daniel died November 9, 1704, at the age of 58 - direct ancestor
• Samuel Hubbard - born May 1648 - died November 4, 1732, at the age of 84
• George Hubbard - born December 16, 1650 - died in 1674 about 24 years old
• Nathaniel Hubbard - born December 10, 1652 - died May 20, 1738, at the age of 85
• Richard Hubbard - born July 1655 - died July 30, 1732, about 77 years old
• Elizabeth Hubbard - born January 15, 1658/59 - died December 6, 1725, about 66 years old

George Hubbard died March 16, 1684/85, in Middletown, Connecticut, about 65 years old. Elizabeth (Watts) Hubbard died December 6, 1702, in Middletown, Connecticut, about 80 years old.

George's will was dated May 2, 1861.

The Ninth Generation   -   The Daniel Hubbard Family

Daniel and Mary (Clark) Hubbard were the parents of one son:

• Daniel Hubbard - born December 16, 1673 - married Susannah Bailey, the daughter of John and Lydia (Backus) Bailey - Daniel died January 14, 1756, at the age of 82 - direct ancestor

Mary (Clark) Hubbard died December 24, 1673, in Middletown, Connecticut, about 26 years old. She died as a result of complications of child birth, just eight days after the birth of their son, Daniel.

After the death of his wife, Daniel married as his second wife, Sarah Cornwall, on October 16, 1675. They had four daughters:

• Mehitable Hubbard

Daniel Hubbard died November 9, 1704, in Haddom, Connecticut, at the age of 59.

His will was dated November 8, 1704. In it he named his second wife, Sarah, and all five of his children.

The Eighth Generation   -   The Daniel Hubbard Family

Daniel had first married Bathsheba Howe.

Daniel and Susannah (Bailey) Hubbard were the parents of eight children:

• Mary Hubbard - Born December 25, 1698. She died in 1774 about 76 years old.
• Daniel Hubbard - born September 1, 1701 - married Temperance Shaler April 15, 1727 - she was born July 25, 1704, the daughter of Thomas Shaler and Katherine Clark - Daniel died March 11, 1755, at the age of 53 - direct ancestor
• Susanna Hubbard - born 1703 - died in 1788 about 85 years old
• Elizabeth Hubbard - born 1706 - died in 1778 about 72 years old
• Hannah Hubbard - born 1708
• Martha Hubbard - born 1711 - died in 1793 about 82 years old
• Thomas Hubbard - born January 2, 1713/14 - died March 23, 1795, at the age of 81
• Jeremiah Hubbard - born 1716 - died in 1803 about 87 years old

Daniel Hubbard died January 14, 1756, about 82 years old. Susannah (Bailey) Hubbard died in 1722 about 47 years old. She is buried in the Ponsett Cemetery in Haddam, Connecticut.

The Seventh Generation   -   The Daniel Hubbard Family

Daniel and Temperance were the parents of seven children:

• Joel Hubbard - born January 1728/29 - died March 25, 1802, at the age of 73.
• Daniel Hubbard - born March 1, 1729/30 - married Eunice Clark April 2, 1761 - she was born May 17, 1736, the daughter of William Clark and Judith Sutliff - Daniel died in 1825 about 95 years old - direct ancestor

• James Hubbard - born December 23, 1732
• Timothy Hubbard - born April 22, 1734
• Aaron Hubbard - born May 22, 1735

Daniel Hubbard died March 11, 1755, in Haddam, Middlesex County, Connecticut, at the age of 53. Temperance (Shaler) Hubbard had died there before 1746, less than 42 years old.

The Sixth Generation   -   The Daniel Hubbard Family

Daniel served in the Revolutionary War as a private in Captain Kirtland's company.

Daniel and Eunice were the parents of twelve children:

• Matthew Green Hubbard - born November 11, 1763 - married Wealthy Smith about 1790 - she was born about 1767, the daughter of Jonathan Smith and Rebecca Brainerd - direct ancestor

Daniel died in 1825 in Broom Hills, Greene County, New York about 95 years old. His wife, Eunice (Clark) Hubbard, died about 1810 in Broom Hills, Greene County, New York, about 74 years old.

The Fifth Generation   -   The Matthew Green Hubbard Family

Matthew was a soldier in the War of 1812. He was baptized as an adult on July 21, 1822.

Matthew and Wealthy were the parents of ten children:

• Julia Hubbard - born July 1816
• Elizabeth Hubbard - born 1818
• Catherine Hubbard - born 1820
• Timothy Brooks Hubbard - born 1821
• Matthew Hubbard - born July 21, 1822 - died July 30, 1822, nine days later

Wealthy or Wentley (Smith) Hubbard died December 8, 1830, at East Haddam, Middlesex County, Connecticut, at the age of 63.

Mathew then married as his second wife Maria Brainerd on April 30, 1831, in New York City, New York. Maria was born September 15, 1793, in East Haddam, Connecticut.
           Note: Some of the children listed above (such as Cynthia and Susan) as belonging to Wealthy
                    may actually be the children of Maria.

The Fourth Generation   -   The William and Sarah (Hubbard) McClane Family

I could not trace down the reason why Sarah was in Tennessee at the time. It was known that her father was still living in East Haddam, Connecticut, in 1870. He was living with his second wife, Maria; although, they may have been living in New York when Sarah left for Tennessee.
          Were the Clark's relatives?
          Was she a servant or hired hand?
          Was she boarding there while she was employed elsewhere?
While in Gallatin, Tennessee, she met and married William McClane on December 28, 1852. William was born June 12, 1828 in Pennsylvania.

Sarah (Hubbard) McClane died September 17, 1866, in Granville, Ohio, at the age of 37. William McClane died in Benkelman, Nebraska, August 9, 1887, at the age of 59.
