The Beginning
The Kelley family, like our Kelly family, has been a branch of the family that has been hard to trace. The Kelley name is a common name, in fact it is the second most common name in Ireland today. Normally It is spelled in one of two ways, "Kelly" or "Kelley" but it has also been spelled "Kellie or Kelli". A number of Kelly or Kelley families are located in the cities of interest and, therefore, it is hard to put them together.
Kelly is an English or Scottish name meaning one who came from kelly (holly or woods) or a dweller in a grove.
The first Kelley of record for this side of the family was Samuel Kelley. Samuel was born in 1745, probably in New Jersey. He married Eunice _____ about 1763 in Somerset County, New Jersey.
Samuel and Eunice Kelley were the parents of at least one son:

Ebenezer Kelley was born October 2, 1763, in Somerset County, New Jersey. Somerset is located in the north central part of the state. They came south to Virginia sometime as Ebenezer married Rachel Johnson December 2, 1790, in Allegheny County, Maryland. Allegheny County is located in the northwest arm around Cumberland, Maryland. Rachel was born October 22, 1769, in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, the daughter of Robert and Mary (Vannoy) Johnson.
Ebenezer and Rachel (Johnson) Kelley were the parents of ten children:

- Isaac Kelley - born February 20, 1796 (a twin)
- John L. Kelley - born February 20, 1796 (a twin) - died January 1, 1866

- Johnson Kelley - (direct ancestor) - born July 25, 1810 - married Sarah Yoak January 17, 1830, in Randolph County, West Virginia - parents of eleven children - Johnson Kelley died December 24, 1886, in Taylor County, West Virginia, at the age of 76.
Ebenezer Kelley died May of 1816 in Barbour County, West Virginia, at the age of 53. Rachel (Johnson) Kelley died in Barbour County, West Virginia, August 4, 1855, at the age of 85. Barbour County is located in central West Virginia around Philippi, West Virginia.
Johnson Kelley was born July 25, 1810, in Randolph County, West Virginia, the son of Ebenezer and Rachel (Johnson) Kelley. Randolph County is located in central West Virginia in (or just west of) the Cheat mountains.
Johnson married Sarah Yoak January 17, 1830, in Randolph County, West Virginia. Sarah was born in 1814 in Randolph County, West Virginia, the daughter of John and Margaret (Carpenter) Yoak.
The Johnson Kelley's lived in Philippi, Barbour County, West Virginia. Johnson and Sarah (Yoak) Kelley were the parents of eleven children:

Died: November 23, 1911, in Taylor County, West Virginia at the age of 73 - her husband, Silas, died December 6, 1888, in Taylor County, West Virginia, at the age of 72

- Carl Bailey - born March 12, 1870 - died February 3, 1950, in Taylor County,
West Virginia, at the age of 80
- Harriett Bailey - born October 27, 1871 - died January 3, 1852, at the age of 80
- Bruce Bailey - born May 3, 1876 - died February 22, 1945, in Taylor County,
West Virginia at the age of 68.

- Verona Belle Dunbar - born June 11, 1869, in Wood County, West Virginia - married James Wesley Fleming October 7, 1885, in Wood County, West Virginia - he was born December 20, 1857, in Arnold's Creek, Doddridge County, West Virginia, the son of Thomas and Martha (Turner) Fleming - Verona and James were the parents of fourteen children - Verona died October 27, 1922, in Marietta, Washington County, Ohio, at the age of 53 - James Fleming died there October 2, 1940, at
the age of 82

Sarah (Yoak) Kelley died between 1848 and 1850 probably in Philippi, Barbour County, West Virginia. She was about 35 years old. Johnson was left with eleven children between one year and about 18 years old. Johnson then married Nancy Jane Sharp. She was born in 1825. They were the parents of one son.
Per the 1870 census for Taylor County, West Virginia, Johnson was a shoe and bootmaker in the Flemington Township. Johnson Kelley died December 24, 1886, in Taylor County, West Virginia, at the age of 76.

Amanda Kelley was born June 1, 1835, in Virginia, the daughter of Johnson and Sarah (Yoak) Kelley. She married Robert W. B. Curry. He was born September 30, 1833, in Virginia, the son of John B. and Elizabeth (Greathouse) Curry. They were the parents of eleven children.
Robert Curry died April 15, 1879 in Barton County, Missouri of wounds suffered in the Civil War. He was 45 years old at the time. Amanda (Kelley) Curry died March 25, 1910, at the age of 74. Both are buried in the Forrest Grove Cemetery south of Lamar, Barton County, Missouri.
