SUMMARY of the HISTORY
of the WALTRIP FAMILY
The BeginningThe name "Waltrip" varied considerably thru the years starting with "Wardrope" from Scotland and then "Waldrop", "Worldrop" and finally "Waltrip" with additional spelling in records of "Wardroper" and "Walldrup'. The name is occupational in origin meaning that the first bearer of the surname performed that trade or profession. In this case the name comes from the keeper of the royal wardrobe. The man in charge of the clothes of the household was a post of great responsibility. The wardrobe was a repository not only for articles of dress but for furniture not in use, and for spices and confections. The first "Waltrip" came from Scotland. Died: (Date/Place Unknown) Luke then married (2) Ann McCracken on September 15, 1842, in Clay County, Missouri. Ann was born about 1820 in North Carolina probably the daughter of John and Sarah Margaret McCracken. Starting at this point sources do not agree -- some sources even indicate they were parents of up to six more children. If the dates are correct, at the time of the marriage Luke would have been 67 years old while Ann was only 22 years old. Even though most researchers indicated the two married, I strongly feel that the Luke Waltrip that married Ann McCracken was his son that was born about 1820. Luke Waltrip died in 1845 in Clay County, Missouri, about 70 years old. Ann (McCracken) Waltrip died May 23, 1873 in Notaway County, Missouri, at age 53. Elijah then married (2) Delilah Haynes on March 4, 1851. She was born October 12, 1835, in Missouri, the daughter of Eli and Mary (Branson) Haynes. They were the parents of eleven children.
